Against this background, Spike Chunsoft recently launched <strong>No Sleep For Kaname Date \u2013 From AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES<\/strong>, a new entry in Kotaro Uchikoshi\u2019s iconic murder mystery series. The project was made possible <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/interviews\/ai-the-somnium-files-creator-knew-everyones-been-wanting-to-play-an-escape-game-and-no-sleep-for-kaname-date-leverages-zero-escape-know-how-to-scratch-that-itch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thanks to long-term sales of the franchise\u2019s first two games<\/a>, but also due to the development team\u2019s efforts to use their budget where it really counts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking to AUTOMATON, Spike Chunsoft executive and AI series producer Yasuhiro Iizuka comments, \u201cHow I see it, there&#8217;s a certain upper limit to how much money you can put into a visual novel game. As in, if you go beyond that limit, the project won\u2019t be profitable anymore.\u201d Iizuka suggests that for the AI series, robust cost-saving measures are crucial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1403\" height=\"789\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1403px) 100vw, 1403px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250712-49989-002.webp\" alt=\"No Sleep For Kaname Date \u2013 From AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES\" class=\"wp-image-51168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250712-49989-002.webp 1403w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250712-49989-002-380x214.webp 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250712-49989-002-768x432.webp 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs fans of the series may have noticed, we\u2019ve been creative about not going overboard with costs, particularly when it comes to the exploration segments of the game.\u201d While acknowledging that it is important to invest in environments too, Iizuka stresses that \u201crather than pouring money into graphics or new maps to give the game a sense volume, our policy is to spend on what this series values most \u2013 the story, depicting how the scenario unfolds, and the interactions between characters.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A specific example of this approach is the reuse of maps for both Somnium and exploration gameplay segments, which was done in both nirvanA Initiative and the new No Sleep for Kaname Date. \u201cWe reduce the sense of repetitiveness by applying filters to change the mood and spacing out scenes.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, an aspect Spike Chunsoft doesn\u2019t compromise on in Somnium Files games \u2013 apart from narrative \u2013 is voice work, which is undoubtedly the most expensive part of development according to Iizuka. \u201cOne of the rules I set for the AI series is that even the silliest little jokes get voiced. We follow this just as strictly for English releases,\u201d Iizuka comments, adding that he considers this kind of attention to detail an important part of the series. \u201cWe make sure to allocate budget for it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1433\" height=\"803\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1433px) 100vw, 1433px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20240118-51165-001.jpg\" alt=\"AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES Nirvana Initiative\" class=\"wp-image-51169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20240118-51165-001.jpg 1433w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20240118-51165-001-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20240118-51165-001-768x430.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On a related note, Spike Chunsoft greenlit and developed the AI: The Somnium Files\u2019 second mainline entry, nirvanA Initiative, <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/ai-the-somnium-files-first-entry-didnt-sell-well-at-launch-but-spike-chunsoft-made-the-call-to-keep-pursuing-the-ip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">despite its predecessor launching to weak initial sales<\/a>. As they were riding on positive player feedback rather than sales figures, it was all the more important to keep development costs at a minimum.
