Seigai Kou, a Japan-born translator of Taiwanese descent who worked on localizing titles such as Steins;Gate and Ace Attorney, talked to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.denfaminicogamer.jp\/interview\/250813w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Denfaminicogamer<\/a> about the difficulties he faced throughout the localization process of the \u201cvirtually untranslatable\u201d Word Game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240004.jpg\" alt=\"Word Game gameplay.\" class=\"wp-image-51128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240004.jpg 960w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240004-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240004-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt like giving up so many times. I thought to myself that it wouldn\u2019t surprise me if the project got completely abandoned if somebody else was in charge of it,\u201d he remarks. Kou even considered retiring from the localization business after finishing Word Game. \u201cAce Attorney and Steins;Gate were also quite difficult to localize, but Word Game was much more difficult. I even felt that, if I were able to complete a project this difficult, there wouldn\u2019t be anything left for me to do in my career as a localizer.\u201d But what is this complex Word Game whose localization process the translator himself nicknamed \u201cScrabble from Hell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Word Game was originally published by Chinese developer Team9 Games in 2022. It\u2019s a unique take on the puzzle-adventure genre and is quite literally a \u201cword game.\u201d Taking on the visual identity of cult-classics like 1980s Rogue, the player character, environment, objects and enemies in Word Game are all represented by words, or rather, Hanzi (Chinese characters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u6587\u5b57\u904a\u622f(\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\u7248) \u7d39\u4ecb\u6620\u50cf \u3010Switch\u7248\u914d\u4fe1\u958b\u59cb\uff01\u3011\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RUZmdpH8_TA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As opposed to the alphabet, where letters represent sounds, each Chinese character is a morpheme \u2013 which means each has its own meaning. The game takes full advantage of this characteristic of the Chinese script, arranging the characters into images and making them interactive. For example, a tree would be expressed with the character meaning \u201cwood\u201d for the trunk and a bunch of characters meaning \u201cthe living part of the tree\u201d stacked above it to represent the treetop. The road is a literal road of characters meaning \u201croad\u201d \u2013 you get the drill. Additionally, the text of the story itself is interactive, e.g., you have to delete words to change the meanings of sentences, or shift their order to rewrite the story to your advantage. All of this makes Word Game very challenging \u2013 or even impossible to localize for other languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240003.jpg\" alt=\"Word Game gameplay.\" class=\"wp-image-51127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240003.jpg 960w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240003-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240003-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Japanese does have its own characters \u2013 kanji, which were \u201cborrowed\u201d from Chinese and altered to meet the needs of the Japanese language, it also has two phonetic alphabets (hiragana and katakana) which are necessary in order to convey grammar and create proper, meaningful sentences. However, as hiragana and katakana characters aren\u2019t morphemes, they do not hold a \u201cmeaning\u201d on their own \u2013 just as the letter \u201cb\u201d doesn\u2019t have a particular meaning in the English language. That\u2019s precisely what made the localization of Word Game so challenging. As the game relies a lot on word-play and grammar-based puzzles \u2013 it wasn\u2019t only necessary to translate the story as accurately as possible, but also to completely reinvent the puzzles in a way that would make sense in Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240001.jpg\" alt=\"Word Game gameplay.\" class=\"wp-image-51125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240001.jpg 960w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240001-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe localization of Word Game wouldn\u2019t work out if it was \u2018just a translation.\u2019 You have to make sentences that hold up as riddles or puzzles, but are also grammatically sound. Japanese is also quite unforgiving when it comes to having to maintain a word count [compared to Chinese].\u201d Kou noted. For example, the Chinese \u201cthank you\u201d is written with only two characters (\u8b1d\u8b1d) while the Japanese requires at least five (\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046). As the localizer, Kou had to work his way around this, sometimes even having to recreate the puzzles from scratch to match the flow and word count of Japanese. He went back-and-forth with the developers in order to find the middle ground between the vibes of the original and the requirements of the Japanese language.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240002.jpg\" alt=\"Word Game gameplay.\" class=\"wp-image-51126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240002.jpg 960w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240002-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250815-511240002-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even getting to this stage was not easy. Apparently, due to its complexity, the game was originally \u201cnever really meant to be localized,\u201d which is why Kou didn\u2019t have any materials or documents that contained the game\u2019s script or guidelines to work from. He had to painstakingly go through the process of playing through the game himself and making thousands of screenshots and notes. Kou says the documents he prepared for the translation easily exceeded 10,000 pages (including the screenshots) \u2013 and that he spent around two months just curating them and more than a whole year to prepare for the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless there is someone brave enough to take upon localizing the game for the English language, it is very likely that, for now, Word Game will only be available in Chinese (Traditional, Simplified) and Japanese. So, if you understand either of the languages, the game is available for you to play on the Nintendo Switch and Steam (<a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1109570\/Word_Game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chinese ver<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/2343610\/_\/?l=japanese\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Japanese ver<\/a>).
