Unfortunately, a list of banned franchises published by China\u2019s Ministry of Culture and Tourism has prompted ChinaJoy to deny entry (or claim to deny entry) to those cosplaying as some of their favorite characters. As reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordchina.co.jp\/b957997-s25-c30-d0201.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RecordChina<\/a>, the move has caused a stir in Chinese-speaking online spaces following reports from Hong Kong media.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A list of animes banned at ChinaJoy.<br><br>This list has been widely mocked online in the last couple of days.<br><br>Obviously there are many people cosplaying these animes at the show.<br><br>But that&#39;s China for you: there&#39;s regulations, and there&#39;s reality! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Zu63YdgDvL\">pic.twitter.com\/Zu63YdgDvL<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Daniel Camilo (@DanielOlimac) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanielOlimac\/status\/1952000194029166603?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 3, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from cosplay, the displaying, selling, and dissemination of works related to the titles on the list were also essentially banned from ChinaJoy. According to the official notice posted at the event, this is to prevent the spread of media that \u201cviolates core values and public order and morals.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some of the titles on the blacklist do cover sensitive themes, including overturning society (Death Note) and sexual content (Highschool of the Dead), China internet users have pointed out that some titles on the list indirectly uphold the values that the Chinese government holds dear. Parasyte, for instance, touches upon humankind\u2019s relationship with its environment and how the two can better co-exist. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/netflixs-devil-may-cry-opening-credits-sequence-has-a-bunch-of-references-to-past-games-and-anime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Devil May Cry<\/a> both feature main protagonists who go against their demonic nature and fight evil. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1076\" height=\"606\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1076px) 100vw, 1076px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250812-50976-001.jpg\" alt=\"Parasyte: The Maxim\" class=\"wp-image-50981\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250812-50976-001.jpg 1076w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250812-50976-001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250812-50976-001-768x433.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ChinaJoy has been criticized for its unusual censorship regulations in the past. According to some, the blacklist featured at this year\u2019s event is a slightly updated version of a list featured almost ten years ago, when cosplayers showing more than two centimeters of cleavage or low-hanging clothing would be fined roughly $800 (source: <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2015\/05\/22\/asia\/chinajoy-cleavage-crackdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may notice that several of the franchises on the blacklist started serialization in the 2000s and early 2010s (note the lack of sentence-long titles).
