Apart from discussing their<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/clair-obscur-expedition-33-studio-doesnt-plan-on-expanding-its-scale-of-development-were-just-the-right-size-for-a-full-price-turn-based-rpg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> future plans for the studio<\/a> and views on <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/clair-obscur-expedition-33-devs-say-companies-making-aa-class-games-like-us-are-bound-to-increase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other AA-developers<\/a>, we asked the two developers how they felt about creating a turn-based RPG in a market dominated by action games. While many titles in the genre have performed well commercially, Broche feels that there is still prejudice revolving turn-based JRPGs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1346\" height=\"756\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1346px) 100vw, 1346px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250003.jpg\" alt=\"Clair Obscur gameplay. \" class=\"wp-image-50729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250003.jpg 1346w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250003-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250003-768x431.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI could talk about the prejudice forever (laughs). Personally speaking, I think Japanese turn-based RPGs were super popular up until the Xbox 360 era. But around the time open-world games started getting more popular through gaming media, [JRPGs] started being considered \u201cuncool\u201d (laughs).\u201d Broche goes on to mention the Persona series as one of the more successful examples of the genre, but suggests that JRPGs still have a long way to go in order to return to their original popularity. \u201cWhile they do still sell a large number of copies, with the Persona series as a prime example, I feel like the prejudice against turn-based RPGs isn\u2019t completely gone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"430\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250001.jpg\" alt=\"Clair Obscur gameplay. \" class=\"wp-image-50728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250001.jpg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250001-380x213.jpg 380w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his concerns, Broche emphasizes that the deviations from the genre\u2019s mechanics (like real-time dodging and parrying) in Clair Obscur weren\u2019t attempts at presenting the game as \u201cthe cool\u201d turn-based RPG. \u201cIt\u2019s not like we added the parry system and built such a narrative experience because we wanted to avoid our game facing prejudice. We just did it because we wanted to do it.\u201d Broche had the parry system in mind ever since the beginning of Expedition 33\u2019s development. However, initial attempts to implement it didn\u2019t go as planned. In the midst of this slump, Broche turned to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which he was playing at the time, for inspiration. \u201cThat is how the parry system you know now came to be,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1350\" height=\"759\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1350px) 100vw, 1350px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250002.jpg\" alt=\"Clair Obscur gameplay. \" class=\"wp-image-50727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250002.jpg 1350w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250002-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250805-507250002-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the inspirations for Clair Obscur were various JRPGs Broche has played throughout his childhood. In <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/clair-obscur-expedition-33-lead-says-persona-5-is-the-best-game-in-the-world-when-it-comes-to-ui-and-combat-visuals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a past interview<\/a>, he cited Final Fantasy VI through X, Shadow Hearts, Suikoden, the Atelier series and Lost Odyssey as just a few examples of these \u2013 but he singled out Persona 5 as the one title that heavily influenced the UI and camera work of his game.
