A new Gundam story by Tomino may also be in the works soon, and he teased what kind of direction said story could take \u2013 this time, there will be no \u201cenemies\u201d in the classic sense of the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI desperately want to make it into a story about battle,\u201d Tomino says. \u201cHowever, there will be no enemies in my next story. Perhaps humankind, who uses the Earth to live on it, is the enemy. I want to create such a story, and I\u2019m certain I\u2019ll be able to start it off as an anime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason why his next work may not be a story featuring \u201cclassic enemies\u201d is fueled by Tomino\u2019s own perception of the contemporary human, and could possibly be due to how the Gundam franchise had been treated over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"458\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250620-492740001.jpg\" alt=\"Mobile Suit Gundam.\" class=\"wp-image-49275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250620-492740001.jpg 600w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250620-492740001-380x290.jpg 380w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gundam series debuted with Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979 and has garnered huge popularity ever since \u2013 however, almost 50 years have passed from its creation, and many of its original intentions and core messages seemingly got lost in time. We must not forget, though, that Mobile Suit Gundam is a work created as a result of war trauma \u2013 it is very upfront about depicting the horrors of war and does not want to leave the viewer indifferent about it. One of Tomino\u2019s main goals writing the story was in fact to make his audience face the realities of war and most importantly \u2013 think about it. However, he doesn\u2019t seem quite satisfied with how his stories are being \u2018consumed.\u2019 While keeping a vague attitude, Tomino remarks that in recent days, people have \u201cstopped thinking about things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"456\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250620-492740002.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250620-492740002.jpg 600w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250620-492740002-380x289.jpg 380w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople find it surprisingly easy to detach themselves from thinking. They fidget with Gundam models and say, \u2018Oh how cool.\u2019 That\u2019s how it is in this day and age. But this isn\u2019t just a present-day problem, I believe. In the industrial revolution, the moment people saw a steam locomotive, they started admiring its power, and thus stopped \u2018thinking about things.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomino continues: \u201cBut if you asked me if I were able to just teach this to young children, I\u2019d say no, as I\u2019m no teacher. For the past 20 years, I\u2019ve been determined to find someone who would, despite my tendency to only talk about vague things, take my words and convey them to the world a bit more clearly.
