But Sandfall Interactive CEO and<strong> <\/strong>creative director Guillaume Broche recently shared some insights into how specific Japanese titles helped shape Expedition 33\u2019s game design in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.denfaminicogamer.jp\/interview\/2505223a#i-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Denfaminicogamer<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1678\" height=\"937\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1678px) 100vw, 1678px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-001.jpg\" alt=\"Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 \" class=\"wp-image-48325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-001.jpg 1678w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-001-380x212.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-001-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-001-1536x858.jpg 1536w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Broche&nbsp;has been playing JRPGs since childhood, to the point that they&nbsp;have helped form his personal sense of what makes a video game entertaining. Due to this influence being so varied and largely internalized, the director finds it hard to point to specific titles and game mechanics that he drew from when designing Expedition 33. However, Broche singles out Final Fantasy&nbsp;VI through X,&nbsp;Shadow Hearts,&nbsp;Suikoden, the&nbsp;Atelier&nbsp;series,&nbsp;Lost Odyssey, and the&nbsp;Persona&nbsp;series as a few examples from his \u201clong list.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPersona 5 in particular is,\u201d Broche comments, \u201cwhat I consider the best game in the world when it comes to UI and combat visuals. The way the camera shifts dramatically with each action from the player, making it feel like you\u2019re watching a movie, left a huge impression on me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1351\" height=\"757\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1351px) 100vw, 1351px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-002.jpg\" alt=\"Persona 5 Royal\" class=\"wp-image-48326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-002.jpg 1351w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-002-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-002-768x430.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Persona series developer <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/20240207-26873\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atlus is famous for its sophisticated and unique UI design<\/a>, and 2016\u2019s Persona 5 has received recognition not only from players, but from industry veterans too. Smash Bros. and Kirby series creator Masahiro Sakurai named Persona 5 as a prime example of stylish\u00a0UI design, even calling it his favorite game UI on his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UjW_TTNtXEM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creating Games<\/a>\u201d series on YouTube.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Expedition 33, Broche explains that he wanted to incorporate the qualities he recognized in Persona 5\u2019s camera work and presentation while adapting them to the game and adding his own touch. \u201cThere\u2019s still so much more I want to incorporate from&nbsp;Persona 5, especially into the UI, so we&#8217;re actually still continuing to refine it even now.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1353\" height=\"757\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1353px) 100vw, 1353px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-header.jpg\" alt=\"Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 \" class=\"wp-image-48327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-header.jpg 1353w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-header-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025053-48321-header-768x430.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flip side of discussing his JRPG influences, Broche brings up another interesting point \u2013 the importance of building upon influences, rather than just imitating. \u201cIn the West, you sometimes see games that just copy aspects of popular titles on a surface-level, aiming to recreate their success.
