Creative Director Nate Fox explains that the setting was chosen due to how beauty and danger coexisted during the era.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1352\" height=\"757\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1352px) 100vw, 1352px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250515-48073-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48077\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250515-48073-002.jpg 1352w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250515-48073-002-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250515-48073-002-768x430.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ja.playstation.com\/2025\/05\/15\/20250515-goy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PlayStation.Blog<\/a>, Fox talks about the two research trips he and a team of Sucker Punch developers conducted in Hokkaido for Ghost of Y\u014dtei. While taking in the beautiful sights of Shiretoko National Park, the team noticed several trees with bear claw marks. A sense of fear quickly mixed in with the wonder of exploration, leading to a unique feeling that the team wanted players to experience when playing Ghost of Y\u014dtei.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1352\" height=\"752\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1352px) 100vw, 1352px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250515-48073-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48078\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250515-48073-001.jpg 1352w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250515-48073-001-380x211.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250515-48073-001-768x427.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another defining moment was when the team came across <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/tourists-get-stranded-on-ghost-of-yoteis-titular-mountain-in-japan-prompting-criticism-from-locals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the towering Mount Y\u014dtei<\/a>, the game\u2019s titular mountain. Called \u201cMachineshiri\u201d (Woman\u2019s Mountain) by the indigenous Ainu people, the local name brought about images of the protagonist, <a href=\"https:\/\/atsu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atsu<\/a>, and her story of loss and revenge.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in 1603 (when the game is set), Hokkaido and its neighboring islands were collectively known as \u201cEzo\u201d \u2013 a cold and relatively uninhabited land where only a few dared venture. Given Atsu\u2019s mission to kill those who murdered her family and <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/the-name-of-ghost-of-tsushimas-sequel-ghost-of-yotei-has-deep-historical-implications-according-to-japanese-scholar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her growing legend as the Ghost of Y\u014dtei<\/a>, the team found it fitting to set the game in Hokkaido.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to research, the Sucker Punch team also consulted various cultural advisors and local Ainu people to make the game as authentic and inspired by history as possible.
