In a pre-launch interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/dengekionline.com\/article\/202504\/39995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dengeki Online<\/a>, The Hundred Line director Kazutaka Kodaka confesses how he almost gave up on the game\u2019s battle system, wishing to prioritize completing the game. However, all of that changed with the belated but valuable addition of Akihiro Togawa, former Persona developer, to The Hundred Line\u2019s development team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kodaka explains that, in the beginning, they were set on making a battle system that \u201cdidn\u2019t get in the way of the story\u201d Given that The Hundred Line is a collaborative work between Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi, two developers whose games are known for compelling storylines full of twists and turns \u2013 its main selling point would be the story. That is why, he adds, they focused predominantly on the quality of the scenario, even if that meant that the tactical RPG elements of the game would end up being less entertaining. &nbsp;However, development became notably more difficult as time passed, and around the time of last year\u2019s Tokyo Game Show, Kodaka was on the brink of giving up on the TRPG parts of the game, feeling resigned when it came to making the battles feel more entertaining. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"495\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250501-476480001.png\" alt=\"The Hundred Line gameplay. \" class=\"wp-image-47651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250501-476480001.png 960w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250501-476480001-380x196.png 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250501-476480001-768x396.png 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, due to many different factors, the team couldn\u2019t complete the scenario in time, and the release of the game ended up being pushed back to a later date \u2013 at that point, Kodaka notes, his attitude towards developing the gameplay also changed. Around that time, Too Kyo Games welcomed Akihiro Togawa, ex-Atlus game designer known for working on Persona 5 Royal and Persona 5 Tactica, to their team. He was among the last members to join Too Kyo games, but according to Kodaka, his addition to the team was crucial to the development and improvement of the battle system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, Togawa worked only on producing the scenario and the script, however, with development taking way longer than expected, they also had him check out the tactical RPG elements of the game. Right around when Kodaka was on the brink of giving up on the game\u2019s battle system, Togawa took the initiative in making the tactical RPG elements more entertaining, and through many discussions with co-developer Media.Vision, he was able to completely reimagine the battle system \u2013 which seems to have paid off, as The Hundred Line\u2019s reviews have expressed pleasant surprise at how deep and engaging the tower-defense battles are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"485\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250501-476480002.png\" alt=\"The Hundred Line gameplay.\" class=\"wp-image-47652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250501-476480002.png 960w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250501-476480002-380x192.png 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/20250501-476480002-768x388.png 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/hundred-line.com\/special\/blog\/detail\/?p=01\">development blog post<\/a> written by Togawa himself, he didn\u2019t have it that easy redesigning the battle system \u2013 he\u2019d write a bunch of ideas down, take walks and travel hoping he\u2019d come up with something new on the way, try fixing his sleeping schedule \u2013 and even pray to the gods to \u201ctell him how to make an interesting battle system.\u201d However, he believes that the team was ultimately able to achieve battles that feel new and refreshing, and, most importantly, \u201chold meaning\u201d in The Hundred Line\u2019s overarching story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy it out now for the PC (<a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/3014080\/The_Hundred_Line_Last_Defense_Academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steam<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendo.com\/us\/store\/products\/the-hundred-line-last-defense-academy-switch\/?srsltid=AfmBOopjlkz9DbyWMnp2QuT5CROPZSB7Nc0Gc4YsiLbX3QTM1VAHpdG7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nintendo Switch<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kodaka talks about how ex-Atlus dev Akihiro Togawa joined The Hundred Line development team and helped revamp the game&#8217;s battle system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":79,"featured_media":47653,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_gspb_post_css":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[64,3],"tags":[17],"class_list":["post-47648","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-game-development","category-news","tag-japan-related-news"],"blocksy_meta":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
