Okabe revealed that his love for Vanillaware games inspired his work on Ender Lilies and its successor Ender Magnolia, especially their striking 2D graphics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following on from 2021\u2019s highly popular metroidvania Ender Lilies, Ender Magnolia officially launched in January 2025 after spending 10 months in Early Access. Like its prequel, Ender Magnolia has received much acclaim from players in Japan and overseas for its gameplay, story and graphics, as well as the added RPG-style elements and improvements over the previous game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250320-45814-001.webp\" alt=\"Ender Magnolia behind the scenes\" class=\"wp-image-45819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250320-45814-001.webp 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250320-45814-001-380x214.webp 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250320-45814-001-768x432.webp 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Ender Magnolia.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussing this strong positive reception that both titles have received, Okabe posits that the games\u2019 2D art style is a key part of their appeal. He likens them to Vanillaware\u2019s Odin Sphere, adding that \u201cThis kind of high quality (2D game) doesn\u2019t come out often.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okabe turns out to be quite the fan of ambitious Japanese indie game studio Vanillaware, known for Dragon\u2019s Crown (2013) and their latest hit <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/20240307-28225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unicorn Overlord, which took over 10 years to make<\/a>. He mentions that he even tried to get a job there when he was a university student, adding that \u201cI really want Vanillaware to keep making such games.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250320-45814-002.jpeg\" alt=\"Vanillaware Odin Sphere\" class=\"wp-image-45822\" style=\"width:670px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250320-45814-002.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250320-45814-002-380x214.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250320-45814-002-768x432.jpeg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Odin Sphere.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, making games is hard work- they&#8217;re not something you can just churn out, so we decided if Vanillaware was not releasing a new game, then we would make it ourselves.\u201d Okabe adds that he once got the opportunity to speak to Vanillaware co-founder and CEO George Kamitani, and told him that this was one of the motivations for making the Ender games.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okabe goes on to say how important he feels Ender Lilies and Ender Magnolia\u2019s distinctive art style is to the games. \u201cIn terms of art, I thought that how the (Ender series) games push Japanese-style 2D animation to the limit would become their strongest attraction.
