Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi shares views"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Too Kyoo Games\u2019 <strong>Kotaro Uchikoshi <\/strong>recently held a lecture at the WePlay Expo 2024 held in China. As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.famitsu.com\/article\/202412\/28746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Famitsu<\/a>, the\u00a0developer talked about generative AI and the ways that AI has and will continue to influence game development in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uchikoshi is known for writing and directing the Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files series, and is currently working on The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, an ambitious collaboration with Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka. During his lecture, he posed questions such as \u201cCan AI-generated game scenarios surpass that of Zero Escape and Danganronpa?\u201d and \u201cHow can human creators beat generative AI?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1268\" height=\"718\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1268px) 100vw, 1268px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240717-34015.jpg\" alt=\"The Hundred Line Last Defense Academy\" class=\"wp-image-34019\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240717-34015.jpg 1268w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240717-34015-380x215.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240717-34015-768x435.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Uchikoshi believes that the development of generative AI has brought about an era where anyone, including amateurs with no prior knowledge, can easily make video games by themselves as long as they can use AI proficiently. &#8220;As a result, it\u2019s likely that a large number of short indie games created by solo creators will be produced from now on.\u201d Uchikoshi comments that while games like this have already been released, the speed and volume of their production will keep increasing, and eventually \u201cflood\u201d the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, AI is still far from achieving writing that humans would judge to be at a \u201cmasterpiece\u201d-level. Uchikoshi brings up various weaknesses of AI \u2013 such as its inability to infer connotations and implied meanings, as well as its tendency to consider endless unnecessary possibilities (the kind that humans naturally eliminate in their thought processes). \u201cThe things left between the lines and in the blanks are a big part of writing, and for that reason, I personally think that it will be difficult for AI to achieve an \u2018outstanding\u2019 level of writing&#8230;at least for the next five years or so,&#8221; Uchikoshi commented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1011\" height=\"585\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1011px) 100vw, 1011px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/20240105-42280-002.jpg\" alt=\"Zero Escape\" class=\"wp-image-42284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/20240105-42280-002.jpg 1011w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/20240105-42280-002-380x220.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/20240105-42280-002-768x444.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Could AI write a convincing sequel to Danganronpa, Zero Escape, or AI: The Somnium Files? Uchikoshi says no, at least not for now. The stories of these games are densely packed with precisely the kind of implied meanings\u00a0AI struggles with. \u201cBut if we\u2019re talking about the next 10 years, perhaps AI could achieve it with surprising ease,\u201d the creator says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even if AI reaches such heights, human creators won\u2019t stop making games. What will they need to do in order to \u201cstay ahead\u201d of the AI generated games that will inevitably flood the market? \u201cIt may sound clich\u00e9, but it all comes down to originality,&#8221; Uchikoshi says. To illustrate his point, he brings up creators like Yusuke Kozaki and Kazutaka Kodaka, whose works have a distinct personal flair. This &#8220;uniqueness that cannot be expressed in words,&#8221; Uchikoshi argues, is something AI struggles to replicate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"999\" height=\"862\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/20240105-42280-003.jpg\" alt=\"AI: The Somnium Files\" class=\"wp-image-42285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/20240105-42280-003.jpg 999w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/20240105-42280-003-380x328.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/20240105-42280-003-768x663.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Uchikoshi, originality comes from cultivating \u201cleaps in imagination.\u201d He gives an example from AI: The Somnium Files. When tasked with creating a character design based on the prompt \u201ca poor middle-aged man, who is a failed\u00a0comedian,\u201d AI produced a generic image that matched the description accurately, but was \u201cnothing more and nothing less,\u201d lacking any quirks or surprises. In contrast, Yusuke Kozaki\u2019s design embodied a distinct \u201cimaginative leap\u201d that elevated the concept into something memorable and original. \u201cWhether or not one can compete in terms of\u00a0creativity will become even more important in the future,\u201d Uchikoshi says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to creativity, Uchikoshi also stressed the value of personal experiences that are not available on the Internet and thus cannot be replicated by AI. \u201cMemories of drinking all night with your friends, coming back home to see your child&#8217;s sleeping face, or walking hand in hand with a loved one\u201d are irreplaceable sources of inspiration.
