Gundam fans uncover clues about the new anime&#8217;s setting\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>People were excited when Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, the anime franchise\u2019s sixteenth mainline installment, was announced during the Gundam Conference Winter 2024 earlier this December. Co-produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/nongaming-news\/new-gundam-anime-to-be-co-produced-by-evangelions-studio-khara-with-a-scenario-by-hideaki-anno\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hideaki Anno\u2019s studio Khara<\/a> and directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/nongaming-news\/evangelions-hideaki-anno-is-only-providing-support-for-new-gundam-gquuuuuux-its-real-creator-is-flcl-director-kazuya-tsurumaki-staff-emphasizes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FLCL director Kazuya Tsurumaki<\/a>, the upcoming anime series\u2019 story centers around\u00a0high school girl Amate Yuzuriha and her unexpected involvement with the underground mobile suit fighting sport called &#8220;Clan Battle&#8221;. With a narrative this intriguing, fans want to know what Gundam timeline the series is set in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Special Announcement Trailer\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LnMIaFV4q6M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all Gundam series take place in the same timeline. While the Universal Century (known as \u201cUchuu Seiki\u201d in Japanese) is the original timeline of the Gundam metaseries and is the setting for most of the Gundam series, other timelines have been developed over the franchise\u2019s 45-year history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, there\u2019s the After Colony (AC) timeline, in which the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing anime and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz OVA occur. These entries center around five teenage boys who are trained by scientists to free space colonies from the military organization known as the Organization of the Zodiac.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous anime installment, <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/20231108-22872\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury<\/a>, occurs in the Ad Stella timeline. This timeline is dominated by various mega-corporations with a wide reach across Earth and space.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s even a feudalistic Gundam timeline called the \u201cTenpou Era\u201d, where the Mobile War History Gundam Burai manga is set. It is here where a martial arts tournament against a humanoid mecha called \u201cTetsuki\u201d is held; with the winner being granted their heart\u2019s desire. There are a lot of Gundam timelines, and a new series could be set in one of these existing timelines, or in an entirely new one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-001.jpg\" alt=\"Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX\nnew Gundam anime space colony\" class=\"wp-image-41740\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-001.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-001-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Going back to Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, fans are using all available information to try to work out the upcoming anime\u2019s timeline. The announcement trailer has hinted that it could be set in the Universal Century. One such clue is the talk of a space colony (a man-made structure in space made to house numerous humans) in the trailers\u2019 opening seconds. While space colonies are featured in other timelines, they are most prevalent in the Universal Century.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-002.jpeg\" alt=\"Mobile Suit Gundam Zaku\" class=\"wp-image-41741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-002.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-002-380x214.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-002-768x432.jpeg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The enemy mobile suits that the protagonists fight in the trailer are also reminiscent of the Zakus of the Principality of Zeon found in the Universal Century. Likewise, the weapon used by the main mobile suit GMS-\u03a9 GQuuuuuuX looks a lot like the Heat Hawk axe used by Zakus. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-003.jpeg\" alt=\"Mobile Suit Gundam Zaku Heat Hawk Axe weapon\" class=\"wp-image-41742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-003.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-003-380x214.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241219-41732-003-768x432.jpeg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Gundam\/comments\/1h8mh5a\/is_mobile_suit_gundam_gquuuuuux_set_in_universal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Over on Reddit<\/a>, fans are comparing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.gundam.info\/about-gundam\/series-pages\/gquuuuuux\/mecha\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">design similarities of the GMS-\u03a9 GQuuuuuuX<\/a>, the <strong>YG-111 <\/strong>Gundam G-Self from Gundam Reconguista in G, and the titular mobile suits in Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, thinking the new anime may be set in one of those universes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some are going so far as to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Gundam\/comments\/1h8mh5a\/comment\/m0u27zl\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">potentially leaked information<\/a> that the RX-78-2 Gundam (the iconic mobile suit from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam anime) was stolen by none other than Char Aznable \u2013 one of the anime\u2019s main characters. As this never happened in the original Universal Century, many surmise that Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX takes place in an alternate version of the timeline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With only the announcement trailer and a short synopsis on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.gundam.info\/about-gundam\/series-pages\/gquuuuuux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the official Gundam website<\/a> to go on, no one outside of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX\u2018s production truly knows when or where the anime is set. The hints shown in the announcement trailer could end up being true or just a bunch of red herrings.
