Eiji Aonuma, the producer of the Zelda series, and Satoshi Terada, the director of Echoes of Wisdom, recently talked about the topic in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.famitsu.com\/article\/202411\/23485\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Famitsu<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"498\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-header.jpg\" alt=\"The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom\" class=\"wp-image-37591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-header.jpg 900w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-header-380x210.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-header-768x425.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As Princess Zelda took the role of protagonist in Echoes of Wisdom, it also became her turn to go silent and allow players to project themselves onto her and immerse themselves in the setting. \u201cAfter all, in the Zelda series, the protagonist does not speak. This is why Link doesn\u2019t talk either,\u201d Aonuma commented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this made things tricky in terms of development. If both Zelda and Link were to not speak, there would be no way to make the story progress. That\u2019s why Nintendo and Grezzo decided to add Tri \u2013 Zelda&#8217;s companion who is the source of her powers as well as most of the game\u2019s dialogue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it seems that making Link talk was an alternative Echoes of Wisdom\u2019s developers briefly considered. \u201cWe made Link talk a bit at first (&#8230;) but it felt really wrong.\u201d Aonuma admits. \u201cWe kept thinking \u2018he\u2019d never say that!\u2019 (laughs).\u201d To this, Terada adds that \u201cwhatever we tried to make him say, it just didn\u2019t feel right.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1426\" height=\"711\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1426px) 100vw, 1426px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241112-39681-002.jpg\" alt=\"Link in The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom\" class=\"wp-image-39687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241112-39681-002.jpg 1426w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241112-39681-002-380x189.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241112-39681-002-768x383.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The team\u2019s qualms about making Link talk resulted in part of Echoes of Wisdom\u2019s story being designed to explain why he\u2019s still quiet. \u201cNo one knew the answer to the question \u2013 What would Link say? And of course we wouldn\u2019t, he has never spoken before! (laughs) Because of that, we needed a setting where he couldn\u2019t talk, and that led to a part of the game\u2019s storyline being formed.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that Link\u2019s three decades of silence in the Zelda games are hard to break, even when he\u2019s not the protagonist anymore. However, the possibility might not be completely off the table either.
