During the 3-month period from July until September 2024, Sony\u2019s Game and Network Services sector saw a significant increase in sales and operating profit thanks in part to increased sales of third-party games and PlayStation Plus services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Quarter 2, net sales in Sony\u2019s Game and Network Services sector were up 12% YoY to 117.4 billion yen. Operating profit was up a staggering 184% to 89.9 billion yen (Adjusted OIBDA: 85.9 billion yen).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1162\" height=\"656\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1162px) 100vw, 1162px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241111-39599-001.jpg\" alt=\"Sony profits by sector for quarter 2 of 2024\" class=\"wp-image-39620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241111-39599-001.jpg 1162w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241111-39599-001-380x215.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241111-39599-001-768x434.jpg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Sony&#8217;s profits by sector for July to September 2024 (termed FY2024 Q2). In Sony\u2019s presentation, they mentioned that, \u201cAs for third-party software, sales significantly grew due to contributions from solid franchise titles as well as hit new IP, including a new sports title and an action RPG title from China.\u201d It is likely that the Chinese action RPG title that Sony is referring to is <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/chinas-aaa-console-game-boom-may-seem-like-it-was-suddenly-triggered-by-black-myth-wukong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black Myth: Wukong.<\/a> \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Increased sales from network services, especially PlayStation Plus, also contributed to Sony\u2019s soaring game-related profits. In Quarter 2, monthly active PlayStation Plus users jumped by 8% to 116 million. Back in mid 2022, Sony <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.playstation.com\/2022\/03\/29\/all-new-playstation-plus-launches-in-june-with-700-games-and-more-value-than-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revised its PlayStation Plus tiers<\/a> into the Essential, Extra and Premium categories. It seems this move is now yielding profitable results for Sony, as the company reports that the average revenue per PS Plus subscriber increased as a result of users switching to more expensive subscription plans, as well as price revisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1302\" height=\"715\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1302px) 100vw, 1302px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241111-39599-002.jpeg\" alt=\"PS5 Pro\" class=\"wp-image-39623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241111-39599-002.jpeg 1302w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241111-39599-002-380x209.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/20241111-39599-002-768x422.jpeg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of hardware, Sony reported that profitability had improved (in September, Sony <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/ps5-just-significantly-raised-its-prices-in-japan-and-people-arent-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raised PS5 prices in Japan<\/a>). However, at the same time, the number of hardware units sold declined compared to the previous year. They have increased projected game sales up 4% from the previous August forecast to 4 trillion 490 billion yen.
