With a decidedly grittier and more realistic tone, the adaptation aims to put a new spin on the original games. Users argued that this detail suggests a mischaracterization of Kiryu, who is, in the original games, depicted as indifferent to titles (or \u201ccute nicknames,\u201d as he calls them) and even experiences his legacy as Dragon of Dojima as a burden. Therefore, the line made people anxious that Amazon\u2019s live-action adaptation might fail to depict the depth of Kiryu\u2019s character.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, RGG Studio\u2019s director and Like a Dragon series\u2019 executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama quickly stepped in to address the matter. In a post on his personal X, Yokoyama, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/yokoyama_masa\/status\/1848043502783156530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comments<\/a>, \u201cI dropped in to check on X, and saw the Dragon of Dojima becoming a hot topic! Oh, so that\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about, I understand. However, the meaning of the keywords is different&#8230;\u201d Although his initial post is a bit ambiguous, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/yokoyama_masa\/status\/1848046300719399027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a reply to a commenter<\/a>, the developer confirms that there is a proper reason why Kiryu says something he usually wouldn\u2019t in that scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1218\" height=\"713\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1218px) 100vw, 1218px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/20240604-header.jpg\" alt=\"Like a Dragon: Yakuza\" class=\"wp-image-31890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/20240604-header.jpg 1218w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/20240604-header-380x222.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/20240604-header-768x450.jpg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/20240604-header-600x351.jpg 600w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its initial announcement, Like a Dragon: Yakuza has been marketed as a show that goes beyond a 1:1 adaptation of the games (it\u2019s even titled Like a Dragon: Beyond the Game in Japanese), taking liberties in tone and narrative. Previously, Yokoyama has called it a fresh take on the story, and while he expressed surprise at how \u201cbold\u201d and \u201cnew\u201d the adaptation is, <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/like-a-dragon-amazon-prime-live-action-series-first-episode-made-rgg-studio-director-tremble-scream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he has confirmed<\/a> that it does not neglect the original story nor essence of the games.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As long as there are deviations from the original plot and characters\u2019 personalities, there are bound to be disagreements about them among Like a Dragon fans.
