Co-developed by Nintendo and Grezzo, the game is the first to have Princess Zelda as the main character instead of Link. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendo.com\/us\/whatsnew\/ask-the-developer-vol-13-the-legend-of-zelda-echoes-of-wisdom-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a> posted on Nintendo\u2019s official website, Echoes of Wisdom\u2019s creators recently\u00a0revealed why \u201cbeing mischievous\u201d was a core concept for the game, and how this ties into the high degree of freedom of recent hit titles in the series like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"647\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-002.jpg\" alt=\"The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom landscape\" class=\"wp-image-37594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-002.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-002-380x205.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-002-768x414.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Echoes of Wisdom, Zelda cannot attack enemies directly with a sword like Link would. Instead, solving the game\u2019s puzzles and dealing with enemies involves using \u2018echoes\u2019. These are imitations of monsters and objects that the player can learn and then use freely to progress through the game. Zelda can also bind monsters to her so that they mimic her movements. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-001.jpg\" alt=\"The Legend of Zelda table echo\" class=\"wp-image-37595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-001.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-001-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-001-768x431.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The director of the Nintendo side of the game,&nbsp;Tomomi Sano, emphasized the importance of balancing player freedom with accessible gameplay. \u201cHaving the freedom to solve puzzles by yourself is a key feature of Legend of Zelda games.\u201d She explains. However, to avoid overwhelming the player, the devs strived to make&nbsp;the echoes distinctive and memorable. \u201cWe made a conscious effort to clearly define the functions of each echo so that players understand how and where they should be used.\u201d At the same time, they also made sure the echoes would be snappy and spontaneous so that players wouldn\u2019t feel like they were waiting around.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"668\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-003.jpg\" alt=\"The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom top down perspective\" class=\"wp-image-37593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-003.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-003-380x212.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-003-768x428.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it was not easy to implement the echo mechanic into The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. As well as making sure everything looked right in the game\u2019s top-down and side-views, \u201cwe also needed to consider all the different places where players might use these echoes,\u201d Grezzo\u2019s director of the game, Satoshi Terada comments. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the team recounted that it was a lot of work to make sure the echoes would work everywhere and not break the game- they ended up gradually removing restrictions placed on the player as development progressed. \u201cOver time, most of the restrictions we thought were necessary at the start of development were no longer needed,\u201d series producer Eiji Aonuma explains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"665\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-004.jpg\" alt=\"The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom side scrolling view\" class=\"wp-image-37592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-004.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-004-380x211.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/20240926-37587-004-768x426.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With Breath of the Wild\u2019s free-form exploration and Tears of the Kingdom giving players the ability to build <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/20231130-23545\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all kinds of crazy inventions<\/a>, Zelda players have got used to having a high degree of freedom. To make sure that Echoes of Wisdom also gave players\u00a0a similar feeling, the dev team\u00a0made \u201cbeing mischievous\u201d their design motto. Aonuma explains that \u201cWe came up with this key phrase because we wanted to do some things that were really out there.
