One of the topics the developer touched on was the series\u2019 detailed 3D environments and the significant impact they now have on development and labor costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tekken is a 3D fighter, allowing players to make use of the third axis with a camera that can capture their character from all angles. Up until Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament, the series used so-called painted backgrounds, which were flat. But from 2001\u2019s Tekken 4 onwards, the developers turned to 3D stages that depict depth of field and put an emphasis on the \u201cdensity of information\u201d shown. This is when development costs first started to rise significantly, according to Harada.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to Tekken\u2019s 3D environments, what we see in-game is not all there is to it. Harada illustrates this point with an in-engine screenshot of Tekken 8\u2019s New York stage (seen below). The image is zoomed out very far, showing a vast map with numerous tall buildings. The part of the map used in battles is highlighted in yellow, and it\u2019s a shockingly small portion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"886\" height=\"509\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 886px) 100vw, 886px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240822-35833-001JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35837\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240822-35833-001JPG.jpg 886w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240822-35833-001JPG-380x218.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240822-35833-001JPG-768x441.jpg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.4gamer.net\/games\/657\/G065722\/20240821076\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4Gamer<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason the developers need to create so much of the peripheral environment is not because it gets used somewhere else \u2013 it&#8217;s all for the purpose of convincingly depicting depth in Tekken\u2019s battles. Things aren\u2019t much easier when creating closed-area environments either, as there are stage interactions to count for, such as breaking through walls or falling down steps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt costs so much money,\u201d Harada comments. The developer hopes that in the future, they will be able to create 3D stages with physics with the help of AI, instead of assets. In Harada\u2019s opinion, the development and labor costs related to environment creation are currently at their peak.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a separate occasion, the creator has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Harada_TEKKEN\/status\/1760182225143009473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented<\/a> that Tekken\u2019s development costs have grown tenfold since the 90s, with Tekken 8 being two to three times more expensive to make than Tekken 7. At the time, Harada named things like server maintenance, high specs and continuous updates as contributing factors.
