But now the game development engine is being applied to improve the anime production process. Japanese studio Tsumugi Akita Anime Lab is a forerunner of this new approach. The results of using UE5 in anime can be seen in their series <strong>I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability<\/strong> (hereafter 7<sup>th<\/sup> Prince).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an extensive interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/weekly.ascii.jp\/elem\/000\/004\/203\/4203718\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Weekly ASCII<\/a>, Tsumugi Akita Anime Lab\u2019s president and 7<sup>th<\/sup> Prince\u2019s producer Tsukasa Sakurai talks about how 7<sup>th<\/sup> Prince\u2019s production process was very different to that of a regular anime series. Sakurai explains that for most anime TV series \u201cthe script and direction\/storyboarding staff are usually different for each episode, but for this show, the same people worked on all the episodes.\u201d What\u2019s more, the same staff were able to work on areas that would normally be handled by separate specialists.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"445\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-001.jpg\" alt=\"I was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince Unreal Engine 5\" class=\"wp-image-34124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-001.jpg 900w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-001-380x188.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-001-768x380.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is all thanks to how Tsumugi Akita used Unreal Engine 5 &#8211; which allowed them to drastically reorganize production. \u201cWe don\u2019t have a team for 3D, but a production system whereby everyone can work across different conventional processes using Unreal Engine 5.\u201d Sakurai explains.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea to use Unreal Engine 5 came when Tsumugi Akita participated in the Japanese Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animenewsnetwork.com\/news\/2020-08-17\/japan-agency-of-cultural-affairs-reveals-animated-works-for-animation-talent-training-research-and-\/.163006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anime no Tane program<\/a> (an initiative to increase the skills of young animators) in 2021. Sakurai explains that during this time, he stumbled across a demo for UE5 on YouTube and asked Naoki Tozuka (who is now responsible for 7<sup>th<\/sup> Prince\u2019s series composition and art direction) to try using it to animate the background for a scene in the short film they made for the project (Ryuugeki no Kyoukotsu). The result worked out well. \u201cFrom this, we were convinced that anyone could use it (UE5), so we decided to incorporate it into our production process for TV series.\u201d Sakurai explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"466\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-003.jpg\" alt=\"I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince anime Unreal Engine 5\" class=\"wp-image-34128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-003.jpg 900w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-003-380x197.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-003-768x398.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>UE5 is relatively easy to learn compared to specialized 3D computer graphics tools. This accessibility makes it easier for anime creatives to make 3D models and backgrounds, allowing all members of the team to work on a sequence together. They can also see how any changes affect the work in real-time, which makes it easier to freely try out new ideas. This also enables animation staff to instantly implement any changes based on the director\u2019s feedback, a process that could conventionally take days. Overall, they found that using Unreal Engine 5 sped up the production process and improved the quality of the final product.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"470\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-004.jpg\" alt=\"I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince anime Unreal Engine 5\" class=\"wp-image-34129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-004.jpg 900w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-004-380x198.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/20240718-34118-004-768x401.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sakurai clarifies that \u201cthe background team is responsible for backgrounds, 3D background modelling and 2DCG monitor graphics. The drawing team is also able to work on all aspects of CG.\u201d He later adds that, \u201cThe director also plays with the Unreal Engine during the storyboarding stage. This is like doing location scouting for an anime.\u201d The animations are inspected by the team who did the original drawings, which is unusual.
