{"id":29216,"date":"2024-04-01T18:15:35","date_gmt":"2024-04-01T09:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/?p=29216"},"modified":"2024-04-01T18:15:37","modified_gmt":"2024-04-01T09:15:37","slug":"rise-of-the-ronins-overseas-critic-reviews-booed-in-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/rise-of-the-ronins-overseas-critic-reviews-booed-in-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"Rise of the Ronin\u2019s overseas critic reviews booed in Japan\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja\u2019s <strong>Rise of the Ronin<\/strong> released to generally positive yet lukewarm reception from overseas critics, with a number of reviews describing the historical RPG as \u201cforgettable\u201d or \u201cunremarkable.\u201d On the other hand, the game has been received with a lot more excitement domestically, and Japanese users are expressing an increasing distrust of video game Metacritic scores.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rise of the Ronin - The Aftermath Launch Trailer | PS5 Games\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/34FMSgdzzvI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rise of the Ronin was one of 2024\u2019s highly anticipated releases, brought by the developers of Ninja Gaiden, Nioh and Wo Long: Fallen Dinasty. The open-world RPG reimagining of Japan\u2019s turbulent Edo period had users worldwide hyped up for another Ghost of Tsushima-level samurai game. Ronin&#8217;s first critic review fueled this excitement further \u2013 as the Japanese game magazine Famitsu scored it at 37 out of 40, with critics praising the story, combat mechanics, immersive world and difficulty levels, albeit pointing out the slightly bland visuals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, Rise of the Ronin has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/rise-of-the-ronin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metascore<\/a> of 76 based on 112 critic reviews as of this writing, and while this is not a dramatically low score, it places the game in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/browse\/game\/all\/all\/current-year\/metascore\/?page=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">55<sup>th<\/sup> place<\/a> among video games released this year, which is quite underwhelming. Japanese players have been voicing complaints about this score, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ss10062018\/status\/1772438449468866579?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commenting<\/a>, \u201c76 is way too low,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/manugonited07\/status\/1772369093355593882?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and<\/a> \u201cthe Metascore is not to be trusted, anything under 80 for this level of game is absurd.\u201d One player close to clearing the game <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/badcolt1\/status\/1772680176163234292?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remarked<\/a>, \u201ceven when I subtract points for the complaints I have I&#8217;d still give the game around 90, I can\u2019t agree with a Metascore of 76 after all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"732\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240401-29216-001-min.jpg\" alt=\"Rise of the Ronin in-game visual\" class=\"wp-image-29220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240401-29216-001-min.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240401-29216-001-min-380x232.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240401-29216-001-min-768x468.jpg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240401-29216-001-min-600x366.jpg 600w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As opposed to its critic score, Rise of the Ronin\u2019s aggregate user score is significantly higher at 8.5. Furthermore, this score has been showing an upward trend in the past few days, indicating that the game\u2019s reception is improving as more players pick it up. This fact has inevitably drawn comparisons to Dragon\u2019s Dogma 2, which released on the same day as Ronin. Dragon\u2019s Dogma 2 is currently in the opposite situation, with a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/dragons-dogma-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metascore<\/a> of 85 and a weaker user score of 6.2. While the game does deserve the praise it received from critics (although its release was followed by some <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/dragons-dogma-2s-microtransaction-backlash-how-much-of-it-is-fair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microtransaction<\/a>&#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/dragons-dogma-2-players-plan-npc-killing-sprees-for-more-fps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">graphics- related controversy<\/a>), some players believe that it was scored unfairly high in comparison to Ronin. One user who enjoyed both titles <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Kaz82030404\/status\/1772541631360647378?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented<\/a>, \u201cThis has made me painfully aware of how unreliable Metascores are.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japanese players have also proposed that the real thrill of Rise of the Ronin may be somewhat lost on a player not informed about its historical and cultural context, as one user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ss10062018\/status\/1772438449468866579?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a shame that this game kind of \u2018picks its players\u2019 because it\u2019s set in the Bakumatsu period. If it had been a common fantasy game, it would have sold a lot more.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Japanese players, Ronin is the equivalent of a French Revolution RPG, with personalities as impactful as Bonaparte making an appearance. But for an overseas audience, the magic may get lost in translation.
