From Final Fantasy X onwards, he composed soundtracks in collaboration with other composers. In recent years, he has focused on composing just the main themes for entries in the series. In a widely reported on recent interview with German publication <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/digital\/games\/2024-02\/nobou-uematsu-komponist-final-fantasy-videospielmusik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zeit Online<\/a>, Uematsu stated that he has no plans to compose an entire game soundtrack again due to not having the physical and mental strength to do it anymore.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the NewsPicks video interview, Nobuo Uematsu stated that \u201cmusic played the role of oxygen\u201d for 8-bit games, effectively bringing their stories and characters to life, as the games had small sprites and no voice acting. He also discussed the memory limitations he had to work within, especially in the NES, SNES and PS1 generations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-001.jpg\" alt=\"Final Fantasy I on the NES.\" class=\"wp-image-28325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-001.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-001-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-001-600x338.jpg 600w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Final Fantasy I on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn the SNES, the capacity increased and I was able to use samples of say the violin or the flute, then compress these over and over.\u201d However, only 8 sounds could be played at the same time and samples used up space, so \u201cI was still worrying about not having enough memory during the SNES days.\u201d With Final Fantasy VII being developed for the PlayStation 1\u2019s CD-ROM format, Uematsu explained that \u201cIt was now possible to stream the music, as in take what I had made in the studio and reproduce it (in the game). However, if I did that it would take a very long time to load in. I think fans would complain if they charged into battle and then it went into a loading screen.\u201d Therefore, in the Playstation 1 generation, Uematsu continued to use compressed sound samples to create engaging looping melodies, achieving a balance between the available memory and sound quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explains that from the PlayStation 2\u2019s Final Fantasy X onwards, game music started to enter \u201cA period where we could pretty much do everything.\u201d Uematsu adds that \u201cAs game consoles have advanced, it has been easier for me to express different genres of music (like rock and jazz, etc.) within game music.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"673\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-002.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-002.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-002-380x213.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-002-768x431.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/20240308-28322-002-600x337.jpeg 600w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Final Fantasy X&#8217;s diverse soundtrack and Uematsu-composed theme song &#8216;Suteki da ne&#8217; added emotional impact to its story.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Uematsu goes on to muse as to why recent game music has become less interesting in his opinion.
