It soon became a big hit both in Japan and overseas- surging to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/yoasobi-idol-tops-billboard-global-excl-us-chart-1235346245\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top spot on the Billboard Global<\/a> chart (excluding the US) in June. In October, it became the fastest song to surpass 500 million\u00a0streams on Japan\u2019s Oricon music chart. At the time of writing, the official posting of the music video on Youtube has garnered over 393 million views.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"525\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20231225-24836-002.jpeg\" alt=\"65th Japan Record Awards logo\" class=\"wp-image-24843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20231225-24836-002.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20231225-24836-002-380x200.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20231225-24836-002-768x403.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20231225-24836-002-600x315.jpeg 600w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Japan Record Awards is the country\u2019s major music awards show, held annually around the end of each year since 1959. Organized by the Japan Composers Association, the show\u2019s biggest award is the Grand Prix. Grand Prix winners are\u00a0chosen from a selection of ten songs and artists selected for the Excellent Work Award.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>YOASOBI\u2019s Idol seems to be a sure winner for the Grand Prix this year, considering its impact and popularity. However, the Japan Record Awards organizers have chosen to exclude\u00a0the song from the Excellent Work Award nominations, thus preventing the song from getting the Grand Prix too. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YOASOBI\u300c\u30a2\u30a4\u30c9\u30eb\u300d Official Music Video\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZRtdQ81jPUQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyzo.com\/2023\/11\/post_359656_entry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pointed out<\/a> that the hit song\u00a0has \u201cadult themes\u201d and \u201ca dark side to its lyrics.\u201d It could be that the Japan Record Awards organizers worried that nominating the song for the main prize could damage their reputation- as the eventual Grand Prix winner is seen\u00a0as symbolic of the Japanese music released in that particular year. As written in the awarding guidelines on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacompa.or.jp\/record\/guideline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Japan Record Awards official site,<\/a> the Grand Prix is presented to outstanding songs that \u201care strongly reflective and representative of the year.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Idol\u2019s lyrics are written from the perspectives of an obsessed fan and a singer. They portray the almost-stalker like behavior of the fan with repeated questions such as \u201cWhat did you eat today?,\u201d What is your type of guy?\u201d \u201cDo you have a partner?\u201d. Then the lyrics switch to the adored singer\u2019s perspective where she sings about how her image is all lies (\u201cKeeping everything about my secret deep inside, \u2018I\u2019m in love with you,\u2019 my career is built on such lies\u201d). Although the Japan Record Awards has awarded its top prize to songs with adult oriented lyrics before, the lyrics have been more subtle. It may be that Idol\u2019s lyrics are a little too direct, and their subject matter might remind people of past scandals involving idol groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the awards show has nominated YOASOBI member Ayase for the Best Composition Award for the same song, and YOASOBI for the Special International Music Award.
