Additionally, it was pointed out that firefighters arrived on the scene but couldn\u2019t approach the building due to the lockdown measures, which slowed down firefighting efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this, protests broke out in honor of the victims. Participants started by insisting zero-COVID measures be removed before demanding democracy and freedom of speech, an end to the Communist Party, and for Xi Jinping to step down. These protests have since gone on and expanded from not just the real world, but into popular video games like <em>Splatoon 3<\/em>. Please note that the <a href=\"https:\/\/accounts.nintendo.com\/term\/eula\/JP?lang=ja-JP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nintendo Account User Agreement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendo.co.jp\/support\/nintendo_network\/eula\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nintendo Network Agreement<\/a> in Japan forbid political speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/bobocock_\/status\/1590624829816082433\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of messages posted in the games include, \u201cSend food, not PCR tests,\u201d \u201cRetire Xi Jinping,\u201d \u201cEnd the Communist Party,\u201d \u201cThe next to die could be you,\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s better to die than not have freedom.\u201d A <em>Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II<\/em> player with a display name that translates to \u201cStop PCR tests, give us freedom\u201d has also been spotted. Even if someone has an illness besides COVID-19, they are not allowed to go to a hospital (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/zhongwen\/simp\/chinese-news-60900714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BBC News<\/a>). In January of this year, a pregnant woman was refused treatment at a hospital for not having a valid negative COVID-19 test and suffered a stillbirth (<a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/news\/html\/20220107\/k10013419381000.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHK<\/a>). Many similar incidents have occurred, so it wouldn\u2019t be surprising to see more tragedies happening down the line. This has led to protesters adopting the slogan \u201cYou could be next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, protests have broken out in major cities and on college campuses across mainland China, but they\u2019ve also extended to major cities in other countries. Protests of this scale are a rare sight in China where the government keeps tight restrictions on such activity. Protesting in China is extremely dangerous, and police can arrest and punish demonstrators for the most trivial of things. Additionally, much of China\u2019s population is patriotic. While this has led to citizens mostly following the government\u2019s policies, a hint of change is in the air.<br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Whatever you write will get deleted<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/bobocock_\/status\/1597497950649077761\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">*Player messages in <em>Splatoon 3<\/em> warning that no one is safe from the iron fist of the Communist Party.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Incidents related to China\u2019s zero-COVID policy tend to make a stir online, and posts made by Chinese citizens mourning the victims of these incidents are all deleted. There are also cases where accounts mourning such victims have been banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has a history of strong censorship. Not only against direct criticism of the government, but also against content the government finds bothersome or inconvenient. Messages mourning the victims of the fire in Xinjiang and criticizing the government\u2019s actions are also being deleted from Chinese social media one after another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In China, all social media accounts are linked to a person\u2019s real identity, so it\u2019s easy for the government to figure out who is posting what and deal with those who post problematic content. In Chinese, this character is like saying \u201cunderstood\u201d or \u201caffirmative\u201d and has a connotation of agreement. It was a cynical and sarcastic article which also ended up being deleted (<a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/690116.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China Digital Times<\/a>). To represent this strong censorship and lack of free speech in China, white papers are being used in protests around the globe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arrested for holding a blank white piece of paper<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first demonstrator holding a blank piece of paper (at least for the current protests against COVID-19 lockdowns) was a student at the Communication University of China, Nanjing. The student simply stood still while holding a white piece of paper. Even after the paper was confiscated, they continued to stand there as if they were still holding it. Onlookers and other students gradually joined in what turned into a large protest on the campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/DoubanGoosegroup\/comments\/z5cxb9\/%E5%8D%97%E4%BA%AC%E4%BC%A0%E5%AA%92%E5%A4%A7%E5%AD%A6%E4%B8%BE%E7%99%BD%E7%BA%B8%E7%9A%84%E5%A7%90%E5%A6%B9%E5%A4%AA%E6%9C%89%E6%B7%B1%E5%BA%A6%E5%92%8C%E5%8A%9B%E9%87%8F%E4%BA%86%E8%BF%99%E6%98%AF%E5%BF%85%E9%A1%BB%E8%BD%BD%E5%85%A5%E5%8F%B2%E5%86%8C%E7%9A%84%E6%97%B6%E5%88%BB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reddit thread<\/a>, we can see images of the protest as it started with a single person and gradually grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" src=\"http:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17114\" width=\"900\" height=\"695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008-600x463.jpg 600w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008-380x293.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008-150x116.jpg 150w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008-696x537.jpg 696w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008-1068x824.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/20221205-229459-008-544x420.jpg 544w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The person who started the protest was arrested by police and their whereabouts are unknown.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The protest acted as a spark for more demonstrations not just in Nanjing, but across all of China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While China of course has a history of protesting (like the Tiananmen Square protest 33 years ago), for many, this is likely the first time they\u2019ve taken part in a demonstration. This has led to many Chinese citizens being arrested. According to statements from students who were arrested and since released, they were subjected to violence from the police, full body searches, and had biometric data taken such as fingerprints, eye scans, and voice data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it does look like the protests have at least had some impact, as the Chinese government has started saying they are going to relax zero-COVID policies. With that, it looks like the protests notched at least one win. However, it\u2019s unlikely that anyone expects these protests to spark a revolution in China, despite the fact that the protests are sometimes referred to as the \u201cwhite paper revolution.\u201d Nevertheless, there are still many people who think they should continue their protesting efforts. Even if it doesn\u2019t lead to any concessions, it\u2019s still an important seed to sow in the hearts and minds of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve come across similar messages in games like <em>Splatoon 3<\/em>, hopefully this has provided some context for what\u2019s going on.<br><br><br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Translated by.
