The Pok\u00e9mon Company has revealed that restrictions have been placed on moving Spinda between games using Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/strong><\/em>. According to users looking into the matter, the issue is a technical hurdle revolving around how the games place Spinda\u2019s spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em> is touted as \u201ca place where all Pok\u00e9mon can gather,\u201d connecting mainline Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> titles with Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> and is a cloud service where players can deposit and withdraw their Pok\u00e9mon across the various titles in the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 19, the service received an update that added support for Pok\u00e9mon Brilliant Diamond<\/em> and Shining Pearl<\/em> as well as Pok\u00e9mon Legends: Arceus<\/em>, making it possible to deposit and withdraw Pok\u00e9mon from both titles.

But there\u2019s an exception. The spotted panda Pok\u00e9mon Spinda. Spinda was first introduced in Pok\u00e9mon Ruby<\/em> and Sapphire<\/em> and is a cute Pok\u00e9mon with dizzyingly distinct eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the recent update to Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em>, reports from the community poured in from players saying they couldn\u2019t deposit their Spinda from Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em> to Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the update, it was possible to transfer Spinda to Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em> through a separate service, but there are now reports that Spinda deposited this way can\u2019t be brought to Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em>. On May 23, this phenomenon was also acknowledged by the official Q&A<\/a>.

What makes Spinda so special?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to players looking into the issue, the problem is related to Spinda\u2019s spots, which are different for each one. A system that\u2019s unique within Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> games. The placement of Spinda\u2019s spots is decided by a hidden internal value that\u2019s been dubbed the \u201cpersonality value,\u201d and this value is determined when a Pok\u00e9mon is generated within the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If written as a hexadecimal number, a personality value might look something like \u201c12 34 AB CD,\u201d with each set of two numbers being what\u2019s called a byte. A personality value is made up of a group of 4 bytes and the game interprets this value to place Spinda\u2019s spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a number of ways these groups of bytes can be ordered. One called \u201cbig-endian\u201d orders the columns in the group from biggest to smallest, which in the case of our example would look like \u201c12 34 AB CD.\u201d There\u2019s also \u201clittle-endian\u201d which orders the columns from smallest to largest and would look like \u201cCD AB 34 12,\u201d the opposite of big-endian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to investigations<\/a> from players, Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> games from generation 5 and earlier stored data in little-endian format. However, there have been reports<\/a> that Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em> reads the personality value in big-endian format. In other words, the \u201cCD AB 34 12\u201d data which should be read in the opposite order is taken as is in Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of this is that it ends up placing an incorrect spot pattern on Spinda. Because of this, a restriction was likely placed on moving Spinda between Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em> and Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em>, trapping those caught in Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em> in the game and those that were in Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em> from being able to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of the restrictions on Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em>, Spinda can now only be acquired in Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em> during a swarm on route 227. It\u2019s a disappointing situation for trainers and the Spinda trapped in Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em> waiting to be moved to Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em>. Hopefully we\u2019ll see a solution to the matter in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, there are reports that Spinda can\u2019t be transferred from Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> to Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em>. We were able to confirm this as well as we couldn\u2019t move Spinda between the two platforms. Perhaps this is also an issue with how data for the Pok\u00e9mon is interpreted. Or limits may have been placed on Spinda because of the Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em> issue.

Nincada<\/strong> is also restricted<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On top of Spinda, there have been reports that Nincada can\u2019t be moved either. According to the official FAQ<\/a>, Nincada caught in Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em> cannot be moved to other titles through Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em>, and can only be transferred to Pok\u00e9mon BDSP<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nincada caught in Pok\u00e9mon Sword<\/em> and Shield<\/em> are also restricted to transfers to those titles. However, it is possible to move Nincada that came from Pok\u00e9mon Go <\/em>or the Pok\u00e9mon Bank<\/em> into Pok\u00e9mon Sword<\/em> and Shield<\/em> via Pok\u00e9mon Home<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
