Bosses tormenting players by trying to bait out punishable moves has even become a worldwide meme for players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This article makes mention of attack patterns for some bosses, so please be aware of potential spoilers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Elden Ring<\/em> is the latest action RPG from FromSoftware. The game features difficult combat with each attack from a boss being a life-or-death situation. You\u2019ll see things like large windups or flashy effects that coincide with high damaging attacks. Players use these movements to help time their dodges or brace their defenses. But there are some enemies that will hold their pre-attack position, as if to tease players by delaying the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great example of a delayed attack is Margit\u2019s downward slash, an attack where Margit raises its sword and slams it down on their foe. Sometimes Margit slams the sword down right away, and other times it holds the sword at the ready while following the player. Many players have tasted the fear and pain of these delayed attacks to the point that it\u2019s even become a meme on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Posts about delayed attacks can be seen here and there on the \/r\/Eldenring subreddit. The post below describes an enemy\u2019s attack pattern as \u201c1&#8212;2&#8212;3456789101112&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;13,\u201d an exaggerated but comical way to describe waiting on a delayed attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-reddit wp-block-embed-reddit\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:500px\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/comments\/ta4pjc\/i_made_a_little_guide_that_will_hopefully_help\/\">I made a little guide that will hopefully help people dodge roll better<\/a><br> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/AuraTummyache\/\">u\/AuraTummyache<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/\">Eldenring<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another comment in the thread described a certain boss\u2019s seemingly endless combo as \u201c123456789&#8212;101112131415&#8212;16171819-20.\u201d Other players pointed out the \u201c&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-1\u201d pattern, likely in reference to Margit\u2019s sudden downward strike after a long delay. Some even mentioned a \u201c&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;\u201d pattern for Margit. In other words, Margit will ready an attack, make the player wait, but never actually go through with the attack. We can see an example of this in the video below, with the poster describing the movement by saying, \u201cit looks like he&#8217;s doing a sick dance move.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-reddit wp-block-embed-reddit\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:500px\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/comments\/tdtvfz\/margit_tried_to_delay_the_attack_so_much_that_it\/\">Margit tried to delay the attack so much that it looks like he&#39;s doing a sick dance move!<\/a><br> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/SubhamoyDas1\/\">u\/SubhamoyDas1<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/\">Eldenring<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The topic of delayed attacks has also been rising on Twitter in Japan, where if you search \u201c\u30a8\u30eb\u30c7\u30f3\u30ea\u30f3\u30b0 \u30c7\u30a3\u30ec\u30a4 (Elden Ring delay),\u201d you\u2019ll see the suffering it\u2019s putting many players through. Designer and manga artist Nishio Nanora also posted a funny comic about Margit\u2019s delayed attack that made a splash with both English and Japanese speaking fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GD6eVyp7T6\">pic.twitter.com\/GD6eVyp7T6<\/a><\/p>&mdash; \u897f\u5c3e\u30ca\u30ce\u30e9(NNTV) nishio nanora (@nanora02) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nanora02\/status\/1502981017145311237?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 13, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We can see Reddit users mentioning the <em>Dark Souls III<\/em> boss Nameless King, who also tortured many a player with delayed attacks. One user even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/comments\/t10ypn\/every_boss_in_elden_ring_so_far_is_nameless_king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented<\/a> that \u201cevery boss in Elden Ring so far is Nameless King.\u201d Another posted a meme describing FromSoftware as wanting to milk the Nameless King mechanic after seeing players struggle so much with it. A lot of players do actually seem to think that <em>Elden Ring<\/em>\u2019s increased use of delayed attacks was motivated by the Nameless King, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-reddit wp-block-embed-reddit\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:500px\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/comments\/t3e4fb\/fromsoft_when_they_realised_that_players\/\">FromSoft when they realised that players struggled with Nameless King&#39;s delayed strikes<\/a><br> by<a href=\"\"><\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/\">Eldenring<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Starscourge Radahn is another example being given of a boss with a difficult attack pattern. One Reddit user posted a meme that asks Radahn, \u201cWhen do I get to hit you?\u201d to which Radahn responds, \u201cthat\u2019s the neat part. You don\u2019t.\u201d Players going through the game using melee builds can be seen commiserating in the comments. For players opting for close combat, Radahn can stop you dead in your tracks with delayed attacks, high attack power, and extensive range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-reddit wp-block-embed-reddit\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:500px\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/comments\/t8mu83\/neverending_combos_and_delayed_attack_shenanigans\/\">Neverending combos and delayed attack shenanigans<\/a><br> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/yeeyeeAssMidlaner\/\">u\/yeeyeeAssMidlaner<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/\">Eldenring<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Images like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Eldenring\/comments\/t9ipyj\/margit_just_pulled_back_his_arm_therefore_i_must\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this one<\/a> show just how much trouble players are having dealing with delayed attacks. The video platform bilibili which is popular in Asia also had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bilibili.com\/video\/BV1Fq4y1i7cn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a> posted to it that recreates this <em>Elden Ring<\/em> experience in real life. The video has also been spreading around the English-speaking world, showing the experience of being a battle worn Tarnished is universal.
