Even when Capcom announced the Exosuit-wearing dino-shooting action game <em><strong>Exoprimal<\/strong><\/em> during SIE\u2019s recent State of Play broadcast, the word \u201cAnthem\u201d was trending on Twitter more so than \u201cExoprimal\u201d or \u201cCapcom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You would think the first thing that comes to people\u2019s minds when seeing a \u201cdinosaur shooter featuring a red-haired female character\u201d from Capcom is <em>Dino Crisis<\/em>. In fact, press outlets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/22969767\/exoprimal-announcement-trailer-state-of-play-march-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Polygon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/capcom-exoprimal-dino-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Game Rant<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/exoprimal-annoucement-playstation-222316620.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Engadget<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/au\/exoprimal-is-a-new-dino-battler-coming-next-year-for-ps5-and-ps4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GamesRader+<\/a> mentioned the name in their articles, and many users referenced <em>Dino Crisis <\/em>in the comment section of <em>Exoprimal<\/em>\u2019s English trailer and on social media. It\u2019s not even in the same genre as <em>Exoprimal<\/em>, which is<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ja.playstation.com\/2022\/03\/10\/20220310-exoprimal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> explained<\/a> as a team-based PvPvE action game. <em>Anthem<\/em> is synonymous with exosuit-wearing third-person action games at this point, and the dinosaur shooting part is likely of secondary importance for those exosuit-hungry gamers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can see tweets from Japanese users saying, \u201cI never thought Capcom would make a complete version of <em>Anthem<\/em>,\u201d \u201cIs this the <em>Anthem<\/em> we actually wanted to play?\u201d \u201cThis news is a reminder of how much potential <em>Anthem<\/em> had and how it didn\u2019t come to fruition,\u201d and \u201c<em>Anthem<\/em> is our hope and trauma, no wonder it trends every time an exosuit-wearing game gets announced.\u201d People miss <em>Anthem<\/em>, or at least, the potential it had.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"ja\" dir=\"ltr\">0.5\u79d2\u3067\u4f5c\u3063\u305f\u3002\u5f8c\u6094\u306f\u3057\u3066\u3044\u306a\u3044\uff65\uff65\uff65<br>\u3042\u3093\u305b\u3080\u3046\u3046\u3046\u3046\u3046\u3046\u3046\u3046\uff01\uff01\uff01\ud83d\ude2d<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ANTHEM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ANTHEM<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/EXOPRIMAL?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#EXOPRIMAL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sPVlYnnEAc\">pic.twitter.com\/sPVlYnnEAc<\/a><\/p>&mdash; \u3048\u3044\u3093\u30fb\u3078\u308b\u3084\u308b\/Einherjar\/\u65b0\u4eba\u82f1\u970aVTuber (@ein_herjar_0602) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ein_herjar_0602\/status\/1501745946165915648?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 10, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption><font size=\"2\">I made this in 0.5 seconds, and I don\u2019t regret it\u2026<br>Antheeeeeeeem!!!<\/font><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>Anthem<\/em> was a hype train that crushed hard and never recovered. Many people saw potential, but it was severely over-hyped and unfinished. The loot system was fundamentally broken, the game was plagued with bugs, and quest design was monotonous and lackluster. The poor reception is apparent on both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/pc\/anthem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metacritic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/opencritic.com\/game\/7084\/anthem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OpenCritic<\/a>. That said, some players genuinely enjoyed the flying mechanic or the Javelin exosuit customization feature. There was some fun to be had, but the game drowned in a flood of negative reports and never managed to resurface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, conversations surrounding <em>Anthem<\/em> tend to focus on how bad the game was. Japanese gamers are also well aware of the game\u2019s severe issues, but even so, it seems like many of them can\u2019t forget about the potential <em>Anthem<\/em> had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to write articles about <em>Anthem<\/em> for the Japanese edition of this website and watched people\u2019s reactions on social media as I played the game with hope and lament. I could see a great deal of interest in the game, although many of them had complaints about one aspect of the game or the other. Some people mourned when the Anthem Next, a reboot project, was canceled, while many still showed anger.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anthem Launch Trailer\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DPf-EATqFng?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>Anthem<\/em> was a gamers\u2019 dream that never came to fruition. A potential forever lost. Yet, looking at the reactions to <em>Exoprimal<\/em>, I get the sense that their state of mind has changed over time. It\u2019s as if their anger has ceased to some degree, and they are eager to fill the void with a better version of <em>Anthem<\/em>. Their dream version of <em>Anthem<\/em> that they never got, whatever that may be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capcom.co.jp\/ir\/english\/news\/html\/e220310.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to Capcom<\/a>, <em>Exoprimal<\/em> is a team-based action game with the primary game mode being Dino Survival, where \u201cplayers form teams of five and contend with each other 5-on-5 in competitive PvE to be the fastest to complete missions while fending off relentless dinosaur hordes.\u201d As you can see, it\u2019s quite different from <em>Anthem<\/em>, so I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll fill the needs of users who yearn for an experience akin to <em>Anthem<\/em>. Nevertheless, it&#8217;s entirely possible that they would end up liking <em>Exoprimal <\/em>for what it is and manage to fill the void to some extent.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exoprimal \u2013 Reveal Trailer\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PXmsffSibbg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Capcom\u2019s <em>Exoprimal<\/em> is set to launch for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) in 2023.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Japanese gamers just can\u2019t forget about BioWare\u2019s looter shooter Anthem.
