This attitude has been the downfall of many who have found some measure of success in the creative industry. While it certainly is true that chasing trends and appealing to the masses may only give you short term success and setting yourself apart is important, looking down on other peoples style and thinking YOU have it figured out is a good way to close your mind off to innovation and end up on the same rut you see others in. There's nothing wrong with making games that are visually more appealing to adults, though I also think most healthy adults just like what they like and don't care if something looks edgy, cute, realistic, etc because what other people think doesn't matter. Especially when enjoying entertainment in the comfort of your own home. I don't think that's something nessisarly unique to children. As a matter of fact I think that enjoying that kind of unrealistic, silly, or nerdy entertainment is way more accepted now than when I was a kid. Again I don't think you need to pick a "team" just make what feels good to you and your passion will show through.
