It’s the main reason why Japanese seek to work in foreign companies within their country, even the health insurance in most of the Japanese companies sucks.

We wanted so badly to move to Japan so that our boy would go there to elementary school, just because I love that aspect of the culture (dedication to society, children taught to clean not just after themselves but the school, as well, etc, as opposed to too-individualistic capitalism which is an even worse issue worldwide).

My ex (senior back-end developer) got an offer from a Japanese company that was hilarious (tbh the recruiter was apologising that they were unable to offer more), if nothing else, because it couldn’t cover the basic costs of living for a family of TWO in Tokyo (where he would work), let alone with one child and a dog.

Plus the strong roots of patriarchy, no wonder that they’re bringing about their own downfall, visible in the lowest birthrate ever.

Considering how globally popular anime and manga is, it was wild to me just how awful working conditions were for everyone involved. Glad it’s improving!
